(French, German)

Everything has beauty, but not everyone sees it.

They change the sky, not their soul, who run across the sea.

Men go abroad to wonder at the heights of mountains, at the huge waves of the sea, at the long courses of the rivers, at the vast compass of the ocean, at the circular motions of the stars, and they pass by themselves without wondering.

It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.

We admire the world through what we love.

Beauty is no quality in things themselves : It exists merely in the mind which contemplates them ; and each mind perceives a different beauty.

Life is what we make of it. Travels are travellers. What we see is not what we see but what we are.

It is in man's heart that the life of nature's spectacle exists; to see it, one must feel it.

Happiness is not easily won; it is hard to find it in ourselves and impossible to find it elsewhere.

It is something to be able to paint a particular picture, or to carve a statue, and so to make a few objects beautiful; but it is far more glorious to carve and paint the very atmosphere and medium through which we look, which morally we can do. To affect the quality of the day, that is the highest of arts.

The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes.
